Fleetwood showed up at the Windmill Ground looking for a good team performance against local rivals Thornton Cleveleys. And that is exactly what happened.
The opening exchanges was a flurry of hard hits and clever play as both teams sized each other up, leading to a stale mate for the opening quarter. Thornton eventually took the lead through a breakaway try, unfortunately, this was a theme for the day.
Fleetwood didn't take Thornton scoring lightly as the away side worked themselves down the pitch one phase at a time. The scrum was working excellently as the front row union of O'hara, Pook and Foden cruised through their opposite numbers. After sustained pressure the ball worked itself out to Obiorah on the wing, who beat his man to score in the corner.
This is the part where I'd like to put that Fleetwood went on to score another 4 or 5 tries to win the game, but unfortunately our hosts picked up their game and started piling on the scores.
Close to the end of the first half, the home side full back received a straight red for a punch on Fly Half Evans.
Fleetwood continued to play on in the never say die spirit all the way to the end of the game and acquitted themselves well against a favorite to win the league.
Young colt Crompton and Nautical lad Haines made their 2nd team debuts and put in good showings.
FT 68-5
Tries: Obiorah.
Man of the Match
Every man who put on a shirt put a shift in, in difficult conditions and against a tough side. Stand outs in the forwards include Taziker and Holden. In the backs, Evans and Clarke had some good moments. This week MOTM goes to Chris Jones for his effort around the pitch, at the breakdown and the amount of turnovers won.
The Weekly Sam Pook Report
Sam did well in the scrums as O'Hara and Foden did the work for him. Line outs still need work. Nearly made Alex Maddern cry. 6.2/10
