Fleet suffer defeat to local rivals

Fleetwood faced off against Thornton for the first time in quite a few years at Melbourne Avenue this past Saturday. Excitement and anticipation was high and there was a good turn out for the game.

Fleetwood went into the game believing that if they could hold off and frustrate league leaders that they would start to make mistakes, giving the home side a chance to strike. Fleetwood succeeded on making Thornton work to get their first score, unfortunately the mistakes did not follow and they started to rack up the points.

Fleetwood's best opportunity to score was when Thornton had both Props off the pitch in the bin. There was some good picks and crash balls between the forwards. Only resolute defending kept the Green and Gold men from crashing over the white wash.

In the forwards, the front row bossed their opposite numbers in the scrum. Chris Constantine made his Home Debut for Fleetwood against his old club and put a good shift in.

The backs all played to the best of their abilities, Josh Hall running some Choice lines and Joe Kirton tirelessly tackling and dictating the play between the forwards and the backs. Patrick Blunn also made his second team debut from the bench

In the end it was a little obvious why Thornton were top of the league undefeated. If it was not for their league dissolving they would probably still be playing the RFU league system. Despite this their was some definite sign of "War Wounds" on both sets of players from a physical game.

The Weekly Sam Pook Report

Sam, to his credit put a fairly decent showing in. Blaming his line-outs on the non-existent wind was a bit of stretch and his banter was terrible as always. I am also starting to think that I'm going to have to start a new section for Simon Betty, who has been upset about not getting his mention in the weekly round up. But this would just be silly.

Man of the Match

This week the MOTM was selected by the match sponsors, The Club's Old Boys. The award went to Joe Kirton, who wisely had Taziker replace him for the drinking contest. At least Fleetwood won something on the day.

No game now for the 2's for the next two weeks. The next fixture is at home to Wigan on the 25th November. 2.15 KO.
