However it was Garstang who started much the stronger. Taking early field position to nudge 2 penalties. 0-6 the lead. Fleetwood reacted straight away with maybe their best 40 mins of rugby so far this season. Harper was first to score, then Taziker and Bridges saw Fleetwood charge into a 21-6 lead. Fleetwood were buzzing now and it seemed anything they tried was finding success. A further try from Howells meant a 28-6 lead at half time.
Second half again Fleetwood started strong and they were in again early. An excellent try by Lyons and an even better conversion from the faultless Harper moved Fleetwood to a 35-6 lead. We may have thought Garstangs heads would’ve dropped but the complete opposite ensued. A real spirited last 30 mins saw them close the gap as a real try fest unfolded. Garstang with 3 try’s and Fleetwood with another 3 tries through Harper, Chafer and Taziker. Then a deserved final try for Garstang. Final score 54-28.
A strong 40-50 mins for Fleetwood. However discipline cost us late in the second half. Followed by some strong rugby from Garstang.
We would like too wish Bobby Johnson a happy birthday. What an achievement to be still playing the game we love at 67 years old. Not only a Fleetwood legend but now a Garstang one as well.
The man of the match went to Tom Veitch. Tom has come to Fleetwood from the Nautical college. He’s played prop the last two weeks, although he’s actually a second row. He has had two really strong games helping the lads out when needed and also doing a lot a the unseen grunt work. Top effort pal. Also, Joe Birks having never played scrum half had an excellent game.
Finally, we would just like to say thank you to all the lads who helped Buzza and his family raise in excess off £1500 for the McMillan charity. It was lovely to see the club so busy after the game.
Report by Stephen Buzza and Johny Bridges.
