The fixture began with a poignant one-minute silence impeccably observed by both teams and spectators in advance of Remembrance Sunday.
The opening twenty minutes were a scrappy, hard-fought affair. However, it was Fleetwood who struck first after weathering the pressure. A huge scrum saw the Fleetwood pack turn the ball over against the head, providing the platform for the first points.
The scoring pace quickly accelerated. Tom Evans made a decisive break before executing a superb offload to the supporting Will Douglas, who scored under the posts. Evans added the conversion. (Fleetwood 7-0). Set-piece dominance continued to pay dividends, with tries following quick hands and power plays. Tommy Hibbert and Brett Whitehead combined to set up Jones for a score (Fleetwood 14-0), and another successful lineout and maul saw Tom Greenwood power over (Fleetwood 21-0). The match was marred by an injury to try-scorer Will Douglas, who was forced off with a bad cheek injury following a dangerous tackle that went unseen by the referee. Substitute Keegan made an immediate, electrifying impact, scoring a fantastic try on the wing. Excellent backline movement continued, with Brett Whitehead breaking the line and setting up Tom Priestley (Fleetwood 33-0), before Whitehead himself dotted down for his second try after great work from Luca Stephenson and Hibbert (Fleetwood 40-0).
The home side was severely tested when reduced to thirteen men following a double sin-binning. Crucially, despite being two players down, Fleetwood’s defence held firm, refusing to concede a single point. Once back to full strength, Shannon Morgan broke from the base of a ruck to outpace the defence (Fleetwood 45-0), and the scoring was rounded off by Tom Evans, who dotted down and converted to finish with a personal haul that included a try and multiple conversions. (Fleetwood 52-0).
Post-Match Analysis & Forward Look
Despite the commanding scoreline, the Fleetwood squad were privately disappointed with their overall performance, feeling they fell short of the high standards they have set for themselves this season. However, the team should not be too hard on themselves. Ramsey, despite their difficult league position, have proven to be competitive and highly physical in most of their fixtures this season (apart from a lone anomaly result due to availability) —a factor clearly evident as their forwards battled hard from the first minute to the last. This result is a testament to Fleetwood's defensive quality to hold their visitors to a nil scoreline, especially considering Ramsey's resilience. The performance also confirms that Fleetwood have well and truly shaken off the away defeats that plagued them earlier in the season due to circumstances beyond their control.
Next Up: Fleetwood will then travel to Bury on 22nd November in a fixture that could go a long way to defining their season. Having beaten Bury away in the very first game of the season, Fleetwood will be confident but acutely aware of the challenge ahead.
