Fleetwood Grasshoppers Women’s rugby team started their new season with a hard fought battle away at Carlisle

Despite the 29-10 defeat, Fleetwood Grasshoppers (Floppers) made Carlisle work For their win with a game that was played heavily through the forwards with strong scrummaging from both sides. Carlisle capitalised early on with a try off the back of a scrum but failed to
convert and Flopper’s responded with a break from scrum half Julia Clapp who touched down in the right hand corner. The game remained close for most of the 80 minutes with Carlisle’s prop making an impressive break and scoring under the posts. Again Hoppers come back with a try from their own Prop Graham West. Two tries in quick succession towards the end of the game ensured Carlisles win but Floppers continued to push their opponents until the final whistle.

It was the first game in the Championship North 2 league for newly merged Floppers, made up of Preston Grasshoppers and Fleetwood Ladies, after the team was promoted last season.

Coach Debbie Hornby said: “We knew todays game would be a tough learning curve for us. Carlisle were a strong and aggressive team who clearly
had more experience in Championship North 2. But we will take this experience back to the training ground and work hard this week to rectify the mistakes in preparation for our next game.”

Floppers play Novocastrian Ladies next Sunday 11th in a home fixture at Fleetwood
