We are saddened to report the passing of Stan Jeffrey, who died on 1 July 2027 at Victoria Hospital, following a short stay in a care home.
Stan was a Life Member of the club and, at the time of his passing, was believed to be our oldest living Life Member. Born in 1938, he attended Fleetwood Grammar School, where he played rugby for the school.
It is believed that Stan first played for the Rugby Club during the 1954/55 season, at just 15 years of age. The Fleetwood Chronicle records him playing for the Wyresiders in 1956. He later went on to study Chemistry at the University of Dundee, where his love of golf began. On returning to Fleetwood, Stan became an industrial chemist with BNFL, where he worked until his retirement. He also returned to rugby at Fleetwood and played for the club for many years. One of Stan’s more memorable claims to fame came at Melbourne Avenue, when he was knocked out by a crossbar after an opposition player’s conversion attempt struck it, causing it to break and fall on Stan’s head. Reports say the referee did not award the conversion. After his playing career ended, Stan was made a Life Member and remained a regular visitor to home games at Fleetwood until very recently.
Funeral arrangements will follow as soon as they are confirmed.
