Rugby Union Nations Championship
What Is It?
The Nations Championship is World Rugby’s major new 12‑team biennial global competition designed to finally align the northern and southern hemisphere calendars, increase meaningful international fixtures, and elevate cross‑hemisphere rivalry.
It debuts in July 2026 and takes place every two years in seasons without a Rugby World Cup or British & Irish Lions tour.
Who’s Involved?
The competition brings together:
Six Nations teams: England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, Wales
Rugby Championship (SANZAAR) teams: New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Argentina
Invited teams: Fiji & Japan
These 12 nations make up the strongest collective field ever assembled for a regular global Test competition
Why Is It Significant?
World Rugby and the unions describe it as transformational, a historic collaboration that adds structure, context, and jeopardy to mid‑year and autumn fixtures. It aims to grow the sport commercially, improve competitiveness, and provide fans guaranteed high‑profile matches.
How the Competition Works
