Match Report: Burnley RUFC 14 – 24 Fleetwood RUFC

Fleet win on the road

Fleetwood RUFC booked their place in the last 16 of the RFU community cup with a well-earned 24–14 away victory over Burnley, putting the demons of recent weeks firmly to bed with a composed and confident performance.

Fleetwood opened the scoring through Mike Jackson, finishing off a well-constructed attack, with Tom Evans adding the conversion. Burnley hit back immediately from the restart with a converted try to level the scores.

Undeterred, Fleetwood regained control — Tom Evans crossing for a try of his own before converting to restore the lead. Moments later, Tom Greenwood powered over for Fleetwood’s third try, again converted by Evans. A well-struck penalty from Tom Evans extended the lead, though Burnley closed the gap late on with a converted try.

The final whistle signalled a 24–14 win for Fleetwood — a performance built on the firm foundations of a dominant set piece, sharp back play, and a wholehearted defensive effort from the entire team.

Head Coach Simon Daws praised his side’s determination and growing cohesion:

“It hasn’t been an easy start to the season as we develop new combinations and a new way of playing. The cracks have shown at times, but tonight’s result is down to the lads’ hard work at training and their belief in what we’re building. We’re starting to see the potential of this group come through.”

Fleetwood now turn their attention back to league action with a home fixture against Orrell next weekend — kick-off at the earlier time of 14:15.
