Team ready to move off the training pitch for first game

Fleetwood Ladies formed just two months ago and are eager to take on their first opponents next month. Colts coach Steve Pearce has guided the new team and says progress has surpassed his expectations.

“Some of the girls were brand new to the sport when we formed and we’ve just completed a tactical training session. That shows just how far we’ve come with ball handling and tackling. Fitness and fun also play a huge part of our sessions,” said Steve.

Kerry McCorkell has previous experience playing ladies rugby and has praised her Fleetwood teammates.

“The team looks in fantastic shape in comparison to October when it really was a matter of being at square one. Team spirit is in top order and new faces are coming along all the time. We have about 20 players on paper and around 12-14 coming each week for training.

“We are looking forward to our first game in January and hopefully will be starting a second training session at weekends. It’s not just about rugby but fitness and having a laugh.

“Overall, in two short months, we’ve come on in leaps and bounds in terms of teamwork and actual rugby.”

Clithereo ladies visit Melbourne Avenue on Sunday 17th January for a 2.30pm start.

The team welcomes new members from 15 years old each Wednesday from 6-7pm and they train on the all-weather pitch at Melbourne Avenue.
