End of an Era

End of an Era

A Farewell to TCRUFC

It is with genuine sadness that we, as near neighbours and long-standing rivals, acknowledge the news that Thornton Cleveleys RUFC has folded, bringing to an end decades of proud rugby tradition on the Fylde Coast.

The red, black and gold of Thornton Cleveleys have long been synonymous with commitment, camaraderie, and fierce but respectful competition. From the hard-fought derbies we shared to the laughter and hospitality after the final whistle, their presence has been an integral part of our local rugby landscape.

The loss of such a club is not just about one team disappearing from the fixture list – it is a reminder of the challenges facing grassroots rugby. Since the disruption of Covid, participation numbers across the region have struggled, and many clubs have had to fight to keep the lights on. Players drifted away, junior pathways stalled, and volunteer numbers dwindled.

Yet there is reason for optimism. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the Fylde Rugby Foundation in schools and communities, we are beginning to see more young players picking up the ball, former players lacing up their boots again, and clubs regaining momentum.

To every Thornton Cleveleys player, coach, and supporter – past and present – Fleetwood RUFC’s doors are always open. Whether you want to continue playing, help develop the next generation, or simply enjoy the social side of the game, you will find a warm welcome here.

And while this may be the end of a chapter, we share the hope that it is not the end of the story. One day, we would love to see Thornton Cleveleys RUFC reborn, back in their red black and gold, and taking their rightful place once again in Fylde Coast rugby.

For now, we salute everything the club has given to the game – your legacy will not be forgotten.
